Lincoln Liberal Democrats say go Bee Friendly to fix bus shelters
Buzz Stop - Lincoln Liberal Democrats say go Bee Friendly to fix bus shelters and improve biodiversity at no cost to the taxpayer
Lincoln’s Liberal Democrat councillors are proposing a motion asking the council to implement bee-friendly bus shelters across the city.
Councillor Natasha Chapman, Liberal Democrat Councillor for Abbey Ward, commented: “The state of Lincoln’s bus shelters has been disgraceful for a long time and the Council have failed to back our repeated requests for funding to fix them. The Council has pledged to reach Net Zero by 2030 and needs to take action to improve biodiversity, protect pollinators and improve access to public transport.
“Bus shelters are often an underrated part of improving public transport usage, with them protecting people from bad weather, making them feel safer while waiting for the bus and allowing those less confident on their feet to access bus travel more easily rather than having to stand around in the rain. Rather than shelters being left in disrepair, they could be contributing to the positive appearance of the city rather than bringing it down.
“There is an easy fix for the Council and that is to back our motion.”
Liberal Democrat Councillor Martin Christopher added “While we understand Labour’s previous position that the Council doesn’t have the money to fix the bus shelters, my Liberal Democrat colleagues and I believe it's important to take inspiration from how other areas have been providing more services without an extra cost.
“Hull Council, for example, have implemented bee-friendly bus shelters recently, using a grant from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund and supported by Yorkshire Wildlife Trust, and therefore the project was finished with no cost to council tax payers. That is the kind of thinking we are bringing to Lincoln in the council chamber.”
